Sleep and Dental Health for Newborn
When you step into the role of parenthood, we understand that you want the best for your newborn. We want to support you in your new role as a parent and, as experts in child dentistry, we know that keeping your baby’s mouth healthy can not only help with dental associated sleep trouble but also provide various benefits for the rest of their life.
Our Tips to Help Your Baby Sleep
We understand that all babies are born unique and different and that no one knows your newborn better than you.
Here are some TLC-approved tips for improving your baby’s ability to peacefully sleep:
-
Feed your newborn on-demand whenever they’re hungry for the first several months. Your newborn will likely want to eat every 1.5-3 hours and, as they get older, you would need to gradually increase times between feedings. When your baby is sick or teething, they may need to feed more frequently (this is called cluster feeding).
-
Try to let your baby fall asleep on their own. A simple way to achieve this is to hold them until they are very sleepy and then place them in their crib. Your newborn will be able to fall asleep on their own as long as their tummy is full.
-
Swaddle your baby with a swaddle blanket or wrap them up carefully in a blanket. Newborns who recently came out of the womb love to feel snug. If needed, ask your pediatrician to show you how to swaddle safely - you shouldn’t let any loose fabric over your baby’s face.
When is it time for my baby’s first appointment?
Our pediatric dentists would love to evaluate your baby as young as 3 months old. During the evaluation, we would carefully examine your baby’s mouth for any abnormalities and possible infection. Our staff can even do a cotton swab test of their mouth and yours to search for possible cavity-causing bacteria. If we are to find any, we can instruct and teach you how to combat these germs to ensure optimal health for you and your baby.
If your newborn is older than 3 months, it’s completely okay. We suggest bringing your infant as early as you can to increase the likeliness of your baby being cavity free as well as to develop positive dental habits.
Nursing to Health
At TLC for Smiles, we support parents breastfeeding their newborns. We see many patients who nurse their children until at least 3 years of age. The experts at TLC will work closely with you to ensure great hygiene and dental health throughout your breastfeeding journey.
Preventing Cavities Together
Positive oral hygiene begins as soon as your baby’s first tooth erupts. We highly recommend brushing your baby’s teeth as soon as possible to start good dental habits. Other alternatives to reduce seeing cavities in your baby is also by wiping the teeth clean after bottle or breastfeeding every night and/or using dentist-approved fluoridated products.
Sugary Drinks
To retain a healthy lifestyle and prevent early tooth decay, we recommend that your child drinks no more than 4 ounces of juice each day. We suggest that water, milk, and limited portions of juice should be the only thing offered for children to drink. Sodas and high sugar beverages should be avoided.
